今说五明谛
传统五明学分大、小五明，大五明是工巧明、医方明、声明、因明、内明，小五明是修辞学、辞藻学、韵律学、戏剧学、星系学。实际上，五明不是这么狭隘，而是将宇宙之万有归纳为五个方面，称之为五明、五暗，开敷出宇宙间一切美好的、利益众生的概之为明，迷在昏沉、不祥的概之为暗，这才是佛陀的五明真谛。
